Dancing at Carnaval

NEW ART joined Tucson’s spring Carnaval festival on Feb. 19 to share movement exercises related to water and rivers. We invoked Oxum, the Yoruba-Brazilian diety of love and rivers, played with equilibrium, followed the flow, and created a dance phrase about our recent experiences with water in the desert. Thanks to our lovely participants and the NEW ART dancers for their creativity!

NEW ART begins “FLOW” at Pima County Community Centers

Katie Rutterer helping two 1st graders make movement. Picture Rocks Community Center. Oct. 2010.

In October, we began facilitating workshops in partnership Pima County Natural Resources Parks and Recreation and the Ironwood Tree Experience. Using movement, we help tell the story of the watershed that funnels water into Tucson and the surrounding areas. We also explore the local water cycle, from rainfall to run-off to infiltration to pumping to household and industry use to graywater or more run-off. Many of the young participants at Community Centers have already had basic watershed education offered by environmental educator Yajaira Gray of PCNR.
